On January 1, 2007, a new standard for ISBNs came into effect, adding a fifth digit, making it 13 digits again. This change was necessary to allow ISBNs to be used directly as barcodes on standard products. Therefore, the number 978 or 979 was added to the beginning of the ISBN, and the checksum calculation algorithm was also changed. All previously assigned ISBNs are uniquely converted to new ones (978 + first 9 digits of old ISBN + check digit calculated based on EAN-13).
